Re: 3 wire to 2 wire headlight actuator conversion (mm86L98)
oh yeah, guess i should have mentioned that this is for an 86 coupe...or, if somebody has a 3 wire they want to sell, that'd work too..still trying to recover from the collision with babmbi
Re: 3 wire to 2 wire headlight actuator conversion (mm86L98)
I have had my 3 wire motors apart and have seen the two wire. It appears the difference is that the 2 wire motor has the wires directly connected to the brushes. The control and direction control come from the electronic headlight module. The 3 wire motor has two stop limit switches and one thermal switch inside the motor. The stop limit switches stop the motor at the up and down position. Direction is controlled externally by the relays. I "think" you would be able to just connect directly to the brushes and bypass the switches to make the conversion. I am getting ready to try this out on mine, but have not done so yet, so this is still "theory".
Re: 3 wire to 2 wire headlight actuator conversion (mm86L98)
You might have to get a different module.
My 84 has 88 motors & module.Theres a kit in ecklers & MAD.to convert.
I had to figure all the wires out on my conversion & have the connections wrote down.If I can help e mail me @yahoo.
Re: 3 wire to 2 wire headlight actuator conversion (nobodyunknown)
I didn't see your email under your profile. I'll make an assumption it is your user name and give it a try. I am very interested in the conversion you did and getting the wiring sorted out.
Re: 3 wire to 2 wire headlight actuator conversion (LaVidaLoca)
yeah, i'm looking at the conversion thing in a serious way as the availability of three wire motors is becoming rare at best...anyway...ii'm thinking that the the post 88 headlight module takes care of the cutoff function of the three wire by means of a current sensor and a cross over mosfet circuit or something similar.. I'm gonna build up a couple of different test circuits utilizing thermal breakers and double pole relays and see what happens on the bench before i implement.
Re: 3 wire to 2 wire headlight actuator conversion (mm86L98)
Mike;
I have some more info now. The electronic module does have a current sensor and also a relay to reverse polarity to the motor.
I have modified my three wire motors to the two wire configuration. It is easy. I took some pics and will do a post later on how to do it.
You don't need to build a circuit. GM used the same module on 87 and later Firebirds. It is mounted on the firewall on the drivers side. I picked up the module and both plugs for $7.00 from Pull-a-part salvage yard. The module and the wire color codes are identical with the Corvette. I have not verified it, but I hear they used the same part on the Fiero also.
This is a fairly easy project. Just a little time consuming since you have to pull the motor out and take them apart.
The rewards are well worth the efforts. You get rid of all the problems caused by the 3 relays and contacts going bad inside the motors.
Re: 3 wire to 2 wire headlight actuator conversion (mm86L98)
I converted my 86 to the 88 and up style headlights and module.I bought the entire kit new from a GM dealer about 6 years ago I think.Lucky for me,I knew the parts guy very well and paid 20 bucks over his cost and didnt have to pay the 400-550 bucks most dealers were asking for the kit at the time.My old headlights had constant problems from day one when i got the car.Got fed up trying to fix it and finding parts for it.
Its a world of a difference and I havent had a single problem since.I had to cut the 3 relays out and rewire a few things but it was really easy.It came with the control module, motors, brackets, wires, etc and the instructions needed to finish the conversion.
More than likely, the only problems I know of with the 88 and up conversion is the headlight motors will need new delrin bushings maybe once every 8-10 years which is cheap and easy to do.Theyre usually under 5 bucks from suppliers or if youre resourceful, some hardware stores sell them for 50 cents a piece but some minor grinding of them would be required to fit.
If youd like a copy of the instruction manual,I can probably send it to you.Im pretty sure I still have the booklet somewhere in a box and i saved it in case I ever had to do any repairs.Cant offer more tips here since Its been a long time since I did the conversion but let me know if you want a copy for reference.
