Default Harmonic balancer orientation

I’m in the middle of replacing the harmonic balancer and I just noticed an arrow index on both the old and new. I assume that means the orientation is important. Can someone tell me what that arrow should align with?

Oh and I can confirm, it is possible to remove the balancer without pulling the water pump. You do have to drain it and remove the hoses to the pump, but then there is enough room to maneuver the balancer out on the passenger side.

Actually I just found what feels like an index boss on the hub, of course pointed down where I couldn’t see it. It looks like that’s where the arrow needs to align.

The hole pattern is not symmetrical. The three holes only align in one position. So the nubs assist in aligning the holes on the first try.

If you have any indication that the hub has been off before, and may not have been reinstalled properly: When the #1 and #6 pistons are at TDC (remove a spark plug and probe for the piston top, close enough for this.), the nubs should be at the 12:00 position. The hub is not keyed to the crank. Although I don't see any weights in your old balance, the original balancer was weighted for final balance during the engine's hot-run after it was assembled. To maintain the original balance, the hub has to be installed on the crank at the correct position. Not critical, and with a new balancer, probably not even a concern. But something to know about....

I didn't realize the pattern wasn't symmetrical, hard to tell in the pics. But when I put the new balancer on, I lined up that arrow with the index on the hub, and the holes lined right up. It was easier than I expected. I'll be refilling the radiator this evening and starting it up, hopefully everything will be quiet and solid like it's supposed to be.
