Oh and I can confirm, it is possible to remove the balancer without pulling the water pump. You do have to drain it and remove the hoses to the pump, but then there is enough room to maneuver the balancer out on the passenger side.





If you have any indication that the hub has been off before, and may not have been reinstalled properly: When the #1 and #6 pistons are at TDC (remove a spark plug and probe for the piston top, close enough for this.), the nubs should be at the 12:00 position. The hub is not keyed to the crank. Although I don't see any weights in your old balance, the original balancer was weighted for final balance during the engine's hot-run after it was assembled. To maintain the original balance, the hub has to be installed on the crank at the correct position. Not critical, and with a new balancer, probably not even a concern. But something to know about....
