Default Headlight gear removal help needed

I'm in the process of changing my bushings in my headlights and have gone this far....................

Before I do any damage to the gear.............How do you remove the gear off of the shaft?

This two pics show what I have tried so far with no success.

Thanks,

Chuck

i did mine by loosening the motor 3 screws. be careful you can only move it a 1/8" inch until the brushes on thr motor slip out of place . i would change each screw one at a time with a slightly longer one . then move the motor a little and the plastic gear will come out.

Read step five in this tech tip. I remember mine was a bear but it eventually gave in.

I had the same problem with my driver's side headlight whereas my passenger side just popped right out.

Now you will all probably think this is screwy, but it worked for me. I decided to try and make my own version of a gear puller for this specific purpose. I ended up using 3 small pieces of 2x4 that I held together to form kind of a bridge. two smaller pieces supported the top piece that I drilled a hole through in the middle. Then I took a hook from a hook and eye latch I had laying around and I bent it so I could put a bolt through it. I put the hook through the hole in the gear axle and the bolt through the hole in the board and put a washer and wing nut and started cranking down. I didn't really expect it to work, but I was getting frustrated and desperate. I used some plyers to really crank on the wing nut and the gear just popped right out.

I just looked in my garage to take pictures, but I couldn't find the hook or one of the boards. I think I burned it in the fireplace when I ran out of kindling.

You just have to figure out how to get some leverage on that sucker.

good luck,
Ron

Mine came right out.You could try turning it over & tapping the housing on something to tap it out of there.
My problem was I couldnt get them back in.
I had to buy new ones.

JD, you're exactly right - always something to fix. However, I find myself fixing things that aren't broken.

J,

It's all your fault. If you hadn't noticed my passenger side headlight was not all the way up when we left Englishtown this past fall I wouldn't have gotton myself into this fine mess. :cuss ........................................ ................... :D

Actually they are bothdone. What a difference, they zip right up and down. Those old bushings had turned into dust and there was no more grease on the helical nylon gear or the worm gear.
