I'm having an odd grinding noise coming from the area of the radiator when I shut my car off. I took the car in to a GM dealer and they say the noise is just air (the noise sounds like a fan grinding against metal). Anyhow, today I switched gauges while driving and noticed that my coolant was at 255 degrees. I immediately pulled over and let the car cool down as it had never been that high before.
My questions is are these two problems somehow related by chance? If they are not, what could be the cause for this sudden high rise of coolant temperature?
Sounds like your fan may have died. Does it kick on above 225*? It may be the bearings in the fan or the actual fan rubbing against the housing that was making the noise. Did it make that noise when you turned it off when it was 255*? If it didn't the fan most likely kicked the bucket or possibly the relay.
I see you have the Hypertech power programer with the 160 thermastat like I have. Hook you your programer and see what temp you have set to turn on the fan. At open track events my coolant temp never rises above 195. I have it set to come on at 160 and off at 180. If yours is anything like this I would think your fan is the problem. Does it come on after the car is turned off? DISCONNECT the battery and spin the fan manually. Does it turn freely? If it does I would look at the relay next.
