Default Rear hatch piston arms

1996 C4 Corvette on the rear hatch window piston arms there was around 7/8 ring on the piston arms that I removed and replaced. What is their purpose and should I retain them.

I'm not 100% sure what you're talking about some cars had either a small rubber ball or maybe a disk on the strut it was an Anti rattle pad or absorber, if that's it I would put as optional but certainly Not throw out so you have it if needed to stop rattling

It’s in the shape of a ring and was the on chamber not the arm of the strut.

To protect your top from damage if you remove it and store it in the back. If you store you're top in the back and look you will see what I mean.
