I had a 1990. The emblem is the graphic part contained within the round metal frame which had two threaded studs which went through the hood and gas lid and were fastened with acorn nuts. Or are you trying to remove the graphic(bow tie and checkered flag) from the metal piece itself?
There's a site called Vello's Vinyl which I think sells a decal which you can put over the existing one.
