My 87 coupe will start and then the engines dies. I have to feather the throttle to keep it going, but the second I let off the gas she dies. Sometimes it will start and run, but lately it is getting worse. I replaced the fuel pump and filter last year. I think it might be my idle air control valve. Anyone else have any comments on this. Thank You :banghead:
I had the same problmes but fixed it this weekend after ruling out TPS and IAC. I did the simple thing and adjusted the screw for a higher idle speed directly across the Throttle Body from the TPS
The fuel pump is turned on after starting by a switch activated by oil pressure. If you have low oil pressure, or a switch that requires higher than idle oil pressure, this can cause your problems. It could also be low idle speed which produces low oil pressure.
Well I started the car again today and I had to keep pressure on the gas pedal to keep it running and my oil pressure was at 60psi, and my code reader has not read any codes. Sometimes it will start and stay running.
I also noticed that my gas milage running around town is down to about 10mpg, and on the highway around 20 to 22 mpg. I wonder about the fuel pressure regulator valve might be bad? Thank for the replys!!!!!
Just use a paper clip to jump the A and B pins on the ALDL connector, then turn the key to On not start. Count the flashes of the check engine light. It should flash 1 then 2 (3 times) then it will flash any trouble codes.
Well I pulled off the throttle body and cleaned the back sid of the throttle plates with a tooth brush and choke cleaner and then pulled the IAC valve and it had build up. I measured the distance from the gasket to the tip of the pintle and it was 1 3/4. My book says it is supposed to be 1 1/8. I turned the pintle until it was at the correct measurment. Installed everything back and now she runs!!!! Going to take her for a test drive. Thanks everyone for your input.
The test drive is done and all I can say is that those who you see in your rear view mirror is losing! In fact I tried it out on one of these kids that drive a turbo honda vtec and all I seen was his headlights in my rear view!! :flag :steering:
