I just replaced the opt in my 95. No big troubles, although I did manage to break off the temp sensor in the pump which I replaced. Once I had it all together, it will not start. Sounds like the timing is advanced about 30 degrees. The only codes I can get are: 1-12, and then it shows module 9 and 10 with no code, and ends with A1 stuck on. Can anyone help me make sense of this, or am I headed for the $500 dealer analysis?
I checked and re-checked the plug wires and other connectors, and sadly, they all were correct. Still the same symptoms. It just sounds as though the timing were grossly advanced. It will almost start if I put about half throttle, but it really sounds poor! Its late, and I will look again tomorrow.
A 12 code indicates communications is good
Module 1 is the CCM (Heater, AC, delayed service bus),
4 is the PCM
9 is ABS,
10 ?,
A is Air Bags.
Sounds like there are no helpful codes.
If the opti is installed correctly, the only way it would be off-time is if it is defective (not an unheard of phenomena).
Re-re-check the plug wires and ignition module wire. Be sure you have fully seated the plug wires on the opti, the rubber jacket should be almost touching the opti body. They take a pretty hard push.
Inspect the opti connector, sometimes the connectors in the plug will break loose (I think Nathon Plemons found this problem).
FYI: after installing the opti and before put the dampner and pump, you can start the engine for a short time with no problem.
Sounds like the logical advise, thanks. So, is it actually possible to install the opti incorrectly? Seemed like a one way only deal to me. Maybe I screwed that up. I wouldn't think so, but I am ready to accept anything at this point.
It is posible to install a opti wrong for the 95-96. (I did it  ) If you force it on it will pop into the wrong slot on the opti. Look at the old one, you will see the one slot of the 3 that are different. The pin needs to go in that hole.
Just wanted to let you know that yes, in fact, I did install the optispark in the wrong position. I disassembled the car and found that it took a slight tug to disengage the opti from the cam. However, it went back together with zero resistance, and the car fired right up and runs great!
So, fair warning to all, YES, YOU CAN INSTALL THE OPTISPARK UNIT IN THE WRONG POSITION
