I have a little puddle under the front of the motor after every drive. I'm hoping it's just the waterpump since I plan on changing the Optispark soon anyway. I hear a slight grinding noise too so that's an indicator. However, I still am not abolutely sure.
Don't "they" make some kind of dye I can put in my coolant to see better?
Does anybody know what that is called and where I can get some?
Your water pump should have a "weep hole" that will dribble coolant if the seal is going south (sorry southerners). If that's dry, I saw the same symptom that went undiagnosed until a cam swap. One of the bolts that hold on the water pump is tapped into the water jacket of the block, and the bolt apparently didn't have enough "goop" on it. That leak drove me nuts! Ok, maybe I was already nuts before then... :skep:
You may need a flashlight to see below the water pump if it's leaking from the shaft, which happened to me when the bearings wore out. I got my dye at Kragen's, in the a/c refrigerant section. It came in a package of two and they also had a complete kit you can buy for about $70 bucks that included the UV light. Just don't forget to take the sleeve gear thingy off the old waterpump and put it on the new one before you install it!
Sears sells an automotive stethscope (spelling???) that is darn good. Put the two ends in your ears and using the long metal probe, put it on the water pump while the mill is turning. If you have bearing going out, it will talk to you! I have used this many times to find noise problems. ;)
