Hello,
C4 Hood Prop
I have been asked to reinforce the hood prop on a C4. The stamping bends at the pivot area. I was thinking about TIG welding a sheet metal piece around the peened area of the rivet. I am open to all sugestions. Thanks for your help.
Good morning,
You are correct the car is an 1984. Which model year hood prop would be more robust? Thank you.
Fixed to Good Morning!
Do you have various year C4 '88 and newer to look at and check out? I am not sure that the '84 hood has the provisions for the later upper strut support or not but if it does I'd do that style for sure. I've heard '84 hood has the provisions and I've seen mentioned that they don't. Maybe some do and some don't. Is the air cleaner provision an obstruction? I don't know.
Now that the year is confirmed maybe a few '84 owners will post and mention if they've changed to something other than the original scissors operation or have thoughts regarding your 'reinforcement' plan.
Is there 'local' salvage sources for the parts?
Always a consideration I believe, how interested is the owner in maintaining originality? I assumed you aren't the owner.
Thank you for all the info. It turns out the car is an '85. This is not a show car by any means. I will check with our local salvage yards.
So far, I have cut out a "P" shaped reinforcement out of .090 steel. I will make some calls before I weld. Or, reinforce this prop and continue to look for a newer item.
Thank you for your time and help.
Thanks, ken
The scissors can be bought even new fairly cheaply if you're attached to them, rather than a repair. If not, try to adapt a late C4 long hoodstrut to the driver's side as mentioned. You can still keep the small front struts.
