'84-'88 manual cars had the Doug Nash 4+3 transmission (4-speed manual with a 3-speed automatic overdrive unit attached to the rear of the transmission). '89-'96 cars had the ZF 6-speed.
If your '86 has a 6-speed, I'm guessing the previous owner probably swapped in the ZF trans, since that's the easiest option. The ZF is a strong transmission, so just get the 6th gear fixed and you should be good to go.

Richmond had a popular bolt in for the 4+3. That trans was geared to work better with the early D44 3:07 gear sets.
