Just wondering if there are any engine swaps for a 85' C4. The L98 in mine runs but not a big fan of the smog pump and all that. I live in Cali and has to pass our emissions tests and so would a newer LS work?
Two of the attributes of a California Emissions Legal engine change are: The replacement engine must be from a model year the same or newer than the car it is going into, and you can't change fuel. Ie no gas engine into a diesel.
All equipment and devices for the replacement engine must be present and functioning. They will be checked by the referee that you go to after the change is completed.
You have an 85 that will be exempt from emissions testing if the 'Leno Law' passes which is currently moving through the legislature. I'd wait and see what happens with that.
I have an 85 Z-51 4+3 and I'm keeping mine mostly stock. I like the "museum piece" aspect of this car. Its intake manifold and fuel delivery system were the grandfathers of the LS engine's fuel system. Plus, the fact that it was run via a computer built in the vintage of a Commodore 64 make it a very unique engine. I featured it at shows by putting a line of blue LED's under the plenum, that draws plenty of double-takes.
But that"s just me.
If you're looking for some detailed information, there's a C4 LS swap page on Facebook. Tons of tech stuff there.
