just aquired a whole rear diff assembly, with 345 gears out of a 1996, will this bolt into my 1985? got this diff from a warrnty job, customer stated his rear diff was howling, and insisted it was the diff, and wanted a new one, the tech said its a rear hub bearing, but he changed the rear end as a assembly, noise was still there, so the gm garage finnally put the hub in and that fixed it, I bought the diff assembly from them for 80 bucks, great deal huh? it has less that 30,000 miles on it, hope it will bolt into my primo 85, PLEASE HELP
Eighty five and up, C4's with a manual trans have the Dana 44. Autos use the 36. If both rears are the same (44 vs 36) they interchange. To make a swap, you need the rear cover (bat wing), and preferably, the "C" beam and drive shaft. The "C" beam CAN be re-drilled and retrofitted in a 36 to a 44 swap. Also, I have seen 44's installed using the 36 driveline, but check for sufficient movement at the slip yoke. You may have to shorten the shaft. I don't care WHAT it costs, do NOT replace a 44 with a 36...unless, of course, you're going to send the 44 to me. Good luck, and...
[devil]Nah...it wont fit, but I'll be nice and get it off your hands for close to what you have in it...so you don't come out too short....

Err...sorry about that... :reddevil :reddevil :reddevil
Sounds like a smoking deal! Did you get the complete differential with cover or just the pumpkin? The reason I ask is the Dana 36 and Dana 44 use a different cover/crossmember, and to fit your car, you will need the correct cover for the differential.
The regular mounting stuff is also a concern, like driveshaft length...some have swapped D44 in place of D36's and not had to cut the shaft, some could not do it without cutting the shaft. The C channel will have to be redrilled to swap to a D44 from a D36 as well. Other than that stuff...pretty much a direct bolt in.

Is there an echo in here?

I was going to let him double his money. Aren't *I* generous?
