Totally off topic, but I ran out of shielding gas for my welder ran out while welding up some exhaust.
Hollee **** it has gotten expensive. A 300 cu ft mix of CO2 and Argon was $243 today. Oofta. Should last me a good long time (4 years or so) but sheesh!
Anyone else have a comparative price they want to share?
It's one of two things I can do it for so I may as well lol. But to be fair, the 80 i just got is probably going to last me several years lol. I do very little with it and even at that mostly do flux core as it's easier outside...
I've only ever done Flux Core, so I've never had to purchase gas... it seems to work really well, but I don't get the perfect stacked coins look that you probably get with gas...

For sure. I forked up and forgot to turn off my gas for like a year. LOL so I am sure I lost a bunch right there. I gotta get better at that.

LOL no stacked dimes from me. I just went straight from stick to MIG. Dabbled in TIG a bit before, but that is a steep learning curve.

that seems really high, maybe it the tariff taxes. good thing I'm done welding on manifold.
unless prices have gone way up in a month. shouldn't be more than $90. unless you purchased the bottle also.
I go to Westair out here in Sandy Ego. I have a lifetime cylinder rental cause they know I am just a home garage guy so that was just the cost of the gas. The last time I bought gas it was $185 or so about 4 years ago. Gas has always been expensive here in Newsomeland. I am kind of jelly at those prices.

I only have an 80 argon bottle,$60 to fill. so that's about the same price.

I also started with stick. Mig and flux core was a nice change after that. I did a trailer for a buddy he was supposed to only use around the property... he calls me telling me he's hauling 1 ton of stone on the interstate and it's doing fine... I don't believe the original axle was rated for 1 ton. My welds haven't broken (yet) so I guess that's okay. I told him it's a half ton trailer from now on...
Yeah I bought some Argon a couple of months ago, and Yup the prices shocked me. Can't remember the exact price but was double what I paid five years ago.
I have used argon a lot in the past for mig welding, yes it does demand cleanliness and is best for those using it often. I can't remember when I last used argon, the flux cored gasless mig welding wire does shield the weld however the fumes are not good ..... 🤔
As for weld quality for general exhaust or car repairs its negligible the difference unless working with very thin metal or aluminum. Yes for experienced welders using it often on critical components, argon would be a must but for most of us gasless works fine and is so easy to use if the surface or prep is not perfect. We have to pay a bottle hire fee in OZ, so makes it expensive keeping an argon bottle for the few times I use a mig nowadays.
$70 for mix and $90 for Argon here. Although I haven't bought mix since last year, I don't MIG much these days... three fills of Argon in the last three months plus a bottle of Nitrogen for the Laser welder.
