Default Tuning Questions

Got a bunch of questions I'm hoping you guys can help me out with. I'm in the middle of swapping a 1986 TPI setup onto a modified 355 in place of a carb. The motor has fully ported 487 casting heads with 2.02/1.60 valves, 224/230 duration @ .050, .477/.480 lift, 110 degree LSA comp xtreme energy cam, and 9.5:1 compression. I have removed the EGR valve, 9th injector, and anything emissions related. First question, will the stock 86 vette chip (automatic trans) allow me to start and run the engine even though there is no EGR or emissions equipment installed? I know I'll get a code but will it physically run? Since I think I'm going to do my own proms, can anyone guide me on a few things I should do to the chip before I even start driving the car? I know its a vague question, I'm just looking for stuff that I need to do to begin to compensate for my mods before I drive the thing and hurt the motor. So far I have upped the idle to 750rpm (I'm using winbin and an 89 vette .bin file), lowered the fan temps, set the rev and speed cutoffs to more realistic values, and I 'think' I have deleted EGR and VATS completley. Is it safe to run with the stock timing and fuel curves? Also, do programs such as diacom require a vaild vehicle vin# to be entered? Is there a VIN number recorded in the ECM and your entry must match? I ask since I don't have the VIN off the vette this stuff came off of. Thanks and sorry for all the questions.

Stock prom will start it-then you need to scan it and see where the blms are before you drive it much. Main thing to do is not run too lean!
If you're using diacom, just plug in the correct yr code with any vin # for a maf tpi. The last digits don't matter.

Please forgive my lack of knowledge but whats a BLM? Sorry I'm just really starting to get into prom tuning :). I intend to use WIN ALDL as scanning software, but I'm glad I could use most any program without a real vin#. If infact I am running lean, what values am I looking to change roughly? Am I adding more fuel to each section of the fuel map or how would I go about richening up the mixture? Thanks again for any help. :chevy

You have a fair amount of homework to do.
The ECM doesn't care what the VIN is. Some scanners use it to know how to interpret the data stream. i.e. Plug in any 86 Vette VIN, you will be OK. There may be a few options for things like convertable/auto/stick, but you will basically be there.

In a nut shell: Use the injector constant to bump the whole fuel map up, then use the 3D fuel map to find tune the BLM's.
