I think it could be made reliable. After all there are no factory blocks or cranks that can produce a 454 small block. Okay maybe a bowtie block, but I'm talking stuff that came in production vehicles. so all of the parts you need are going to be top notch after market stuff. Everything would need to be blue printed and balanced, but then again why build a big inch small block and not build it right.
Dart and World are 2 companies starting to make blocks for this big a bore. Its just one more thing for me to throw in the mix when I think about mods for next winter.
I saw in a recent magazine that a company was building 415 and 427 ci small blocks. They were using the Dart block. I'll look up the article and post a website if they have one. They ran around $9k for an aluminum head 427 and put out around 525hp, I think.
They might have info on making an even larger sb like the 454...
I've built two 450+ inch small blocks... One on an Olds Rocket block the other on a Dart...Both tall decks (natch). 4.185" bores with 4.125" strokes...VERY SHORT compression height and terrible rod stroke ratio. One is a Roots blown motor the other is n/a. They aren't rpm motors but the have a very broad torque curve and make pretty good power. But they tend to be octane sensitive because of the r/s ratio. I'm not really all that impressed with them; I tend to be of the big bore/short stroke persuasion.
