Default Help? Car will crank but not start

1996 Chevrolet Corvette (C4) Coupe, LT1, automatic transmission

Short version

Car won’t start. The fuel pump relay isn’t getting power on any of its sockets, including the one that should always have 12v and the one that should turn on with the key. I tested with the key on and off. I checked several fuses and none appear to be blown (list below).

Long version

I serviced the cassette stereo. After reinstalling everything, I reconnected the battery and tested the stereo and climate control. Both worked fine, so I began reinstalling the plastic trim. While installing the trim around the shifter, the car suddenly shut off.

I thought it might be due to a low battery. I tried jump-starting it with a portable jump starter. The car cranks but won’t start. I had the battery tested and charged, and was told it’s working, but the car still only cranks.

I checked fuses by pulling them and testing for continuity. None appear blown.

Fuses checked:

1 ECM

2 Fuel pump

14 Fuel pump

15 Automatic transmission

22 Injectors

23 Injectors

25 Ignition coil

After I unplugged the battery cables, I didn’t remove any fuses but I checked continuity on all of them.

Next I checked the fuel pump relay. It clicks when given 12v and shows a change in continuity, so it appears to work. However, it’s not getting any voltage.
  • Pin 2 should get 12v with the key on
  • Pin 3 should always have 12v
Neither has power, even with the key on.

At this point the battery was getting low again. I tried jumping it, but still no voltage at pins 2 or 3.

I checked both sides of the fuel pump fuse and both have voltage. I unplugged the battery and removed the fuse, then checked continuity from the fuse sockets to pin 3 on the relay, but got no continuity.

I’m thinking the next step is to remove the battery and inspect the underside of the fuse box for wiring issues.

Any suggestions on what to try next?

Should I replace the battery since it keeps draining?

Have you tried putting 12 volt directly to the fuel pump to ensure it is working?

There have been a few people who have had issues with fuses not making contact in the fuse box. Have you checked for 12v on both sides of the fuse?
