1987 Corvette that has a JEGS HP57 (High Performance Small Block with Edlebrock Heads). Had a Reman 700R4 from Oreily's that burnt up the 1st time I tried to drive it more than a mile.
I've got a New Reman trans from Moveras ready to go in that I bought from AutoZone. My question is..
AutoZone is telling me to use Dexron VI, Moveras is telling me to use Dexron III and to not use Dexron VI. I'd really like to use a AC Delco fluid, but my local Chevy Dealer is telling me Dexron VI is what everything migrated to.
They can get an AC Delco Type 3 Fluid, but they and I aren't sure if its the same fluid type. I added a few quarts of the Dex/Merc from Valvoline in the old trans cause it was low.
This Cars been a basket case since I bought it, with Flexplate bolts being loose when I bought it.. Random bolts and parts missing all over it. I've pulled a trans out of this car twice now and I'm sure as heck don't want to do it a 3rd time.
Does anyone know if AC Delco Type III fluid is the same as Dexron III?? I don't think the Valvoline had anything to do with my trans failing, I really think it was bad prior to me buying it. I just want to be sure on the fluid.
Do you also look for motor oil with 1987 specifications? Or do you look for the best made now? Does anyone really think Dextron would come out with a new and better trans fluid that would actually WRECK older transmissions? Dan

As a matter of fact, I did. I bought Lucas hot rod 10W-30 specifically designed for older vehicles.
And as far as my trans fluid goes, I want to make sure I put the correct fluid in the transmission stated by the people I got it from. They stated Dexron III.
i’m getting quite a few mixed answers and I want to be sure before spending all this money and going through all this work that what I put in will work.
What Is The Difference Between Dexron 3 and Dexron 6?
The main difference between Dexron 3 and Dexron 6 is that Dexron 6 is a synthetic fluid and Dexron 3 is not. Dexron 6 has more up to date fluid properties which allows for a longer fluid life and is much better at dealing with higher temperatures. Since Dexron 6 is backwards compatible, you can use it in Dexron 3 applications.
A few years ago many that had transmissions that called for Dexron III actually transitioned to Castrol Transynd TES-295 or TES-389. The Castrol Transynd TES-295 is an easy find at Navistar truck dealers I believe. The TES-389 is a much more difficult find but is Dexron III. An Allison Transmission/Detroit Engine Facility should be able to help. I used TES-295 in a couple of 4T60/4T65e in Bonneville SSEi. The rebuilder should be very familiar I'd think with the Castrol Transynd. It is pricey.
