Hi everyone, I am going to be changing my 2.59 to 3.07 and was wondering which way is easier while using jackstands. Removing the complete rear with the batwing attached or to remove the batwing bolts and pull the differential. Also Which bushings should I change while doing this job. Thanks in advance,
I'm finishing up a gear change on my '94 (2.59 to 3.31). Just drop the entire rear down. Not too hard to get off but can be a PITA to get back up because of bolts lining up OK. I've got all the major parts back in place ... now I just have to tighten up, torque to specs, and I'm set.
I did this last winter, I found the Factory Field Service Manual (FSM) to be invaluable. I also use the Haynes $12.99 special from Pep Boys, it shows all the little "tricks" like relieving the spring pressure using a floor jack instead of an special expensive spring release tool shown in the FSM.
BTW, I did it on jack stands, dropped the entire unit with batwing, I can't imagine how to seal the case up with the batwing on the car. This a good time to replace the bushing with poly ones, the batwing bushings really need to be poly, it tightens up the entire drivetrain.
