I have an early 86 with the cast iron heads with a basically stock setup. What mods are needed in order to obtain 300rwhp? Any info would be helpful. :yesnod:
Check my site for gains from "simple" mods and you've got mail on results of mods to a late model L98.
My bad in the e-mail; I just noticed that you are after 300rwhp (not 300chp) or about 360chp. In that case plan on extensive engine mods (heads, cam, LT headers, intake, etc) if you intend to remain NA.
First, do the engine mods on 65Z01's website, those are simple and free up a few HP.
To get that much though, youll need to ditch the Intake currently on the engine, and also the heads and cam.
The iron heads on yours (and mine) are worthless, best bet is some AFR 190s but for that power goal, you could also use 88-91 vette heads off of ebay or a junkyard vette or even on the For Sale section. These 113 D-ports support roughly 350hp unported, which might work for you. The AFRs though, have more upwards potential for later modifications to the bottom end.

As for the intake, the stock one was built for a 305, so it inhibits high end HP and promotes torque. If youre only wanting 300rwhp, i would go with the Superram from Lingenfelter.com.
The superram runs best with the LPE/Accel 74219 cam, same website.
The stock transmission and rear will hold up to the power for a good while, as long as you run street tires and service the tranny regularly.
:iagree: Do the cheap/free mods listed on 65Z01's site. They won't give you a neck snapping feel, but you can tell you did the mods and it just helps to optimize your current setup. Next for me would be a good set of longtube headers and then the intake, cam, and heads.
