Has anyone put coilovers on their C4 or are just the traditional shocks and struts better? I have coilovers on my STI, but I have no idea how the ride would be on a C4 with coilovers.
Coilovers are a better idea on 1989+ and reinforce mount areas worth considering
I think the quality of the shocks more important than if it’s coilover or leaf spring. Ohlins Penske Ridetech on a leaf spring car will always be more suitable than a cheap China brand on coilover springs. Of course there’s lots in between.
Let's start with the fact that there are no struts on a C4. Then, as AZSP33D alludes to above, we need to understand that a monoleaf spring and a coil spring do the exact same thing: neither is "better" than the other. If you plan to keep stock spring rates and your monoleafs are in good shape, then keep them and just get good shocks (KYB is not good!). If you plan to increase your spring rates above what a Z51 set of OE springs provides, then there are no monoleaf options these days. In that case, you really have no choice but to go with coilovers. Either way, I agree with AZS33D that damper quality is key, and that means spending real money: $1000 minimum for a set of decent shocks with one-way rebound adjustment, or $2000 for a set of decent coilovers with the same feature.
