Default 86 C4 Electronic Heat/AC Controls

Have an 86 Vette with Heat/AC issues. When I start the car, it blows heat as the car warms up. I have to turn OFF the control unit everytime I start the car. I just bought the car and KNOW the AC needs charged. My simple question knowing it has probably been asked many times but I cannot find any answers through research. I have read about the blend flap motor as an issue. I have read that the electronic unit goes through a "self check". I have seen all the ads about the vendors that rebuild the heat/ac control components. Just do not understand why I have to push the OFF button when I start the car. Any help would be appreciated.

My 86 will do that after I disconnect the battery. But normally no.

I close the switch on the ground wire, start and drive. Are you saying that if I did not disconnect the battery, it would not happen? I believe I have driven, stopped, started and driven again and had to shut it off each time. But I do try to open the ground wire when I garage it. Thanks for the reply.
