My 84 has no mufflers (previous owners choice) and I say it is a tasteful level of loud. The catalytic converter used to be gutted and that made it a bit louder.
But yes some basic exhaust modifications can definitely make these things louder. I'm sure people can chime in with stories about more sophisticated exhaust systems, but that is outside of my realm of knowledge.
