I have been calling around and the prices have a range from $260 to $780. I like the $260 price and agreed to have them do it. The have called back twice with additional requirements. First, they said the trim would need to be replaced. Not to bad at and additional $54. Now they called and said that the weather stripping that runs up the pillar and accross the top would need to be replace also at $250. Now the cheapest price is getting up there. They haven't seen the car but the weather stripping is shot and does need to be replaced but what about the metal window trim. Is it that fragile? The said that they only use GM weather stripping and new glass.
Any inputs on what is normal for this expenditure??
Sounds about right. I got the same $500-$700 from 3 different places. They all said I gotta replace the weatherstrip and trim as well. The 3 places I called were references from three different dealership body shops.
Do yourself a favor and call a couple of dealership body shops and ask them who they use for Corvette windshield replacements, be sure you emphasize that it's a Corvette, 99.9% of the body shops outsource this part of service. It's gonna cost the same price but at least you know you're getting someone with Vet experience.
The guys that quoted you the $260 then added prices for weatherstrip and trim don't sound like they have much Vet experience, if any, and that's why they keep calling you back as they figure out they need to do a different procedure and need to add parts out of the norm.
After doing windshields for the last 9 years, I'll tell you right now do not use the shop that low balled and keeps upping the price. When a company keeps calling back it's because they did not realize they'd need the other components to do it right.
In other words they've never done one. This is not a good combo to get a go job done. Do what the second poster said. Call the Chevy dealer's body shop and see who they sub their work out to.
Back in Jan 2002, I priced weatherstrip and trim for my '86. Jeff Kopp replied that Chevy had just raised the prices significantly. Here's the prices Jeff quoted then:
> There's a molding and weatherstrip retainer across the top that is all
> one piece - P/N 14049033 - $115.50.
> On the sides the moldings and retainers are two separate pieces. The
> moldings are P/N 14049031 and 14049032, LH and RH, and run $82.50 each.
> The retainers are P/N's 14049243 and 14049244 and run $20.79 each.
> Then you have the weatherstrip that goes all the way around - P/N
> 10268887 - $174.90.
I ended up buying the weatherstrip from him, but bought used trim parts off eBay. I steel wooled, then epoxied the dents and scratches in the trim. That's as far as I got. First warm day, I'll paint them (using SEM Trim Paint, 39143 Original Trim Black color, which dries a dull black, and is formulated to stick to most anything. I used it extensively for interior trim repainting, and it's holding up fine). Then I'll get a windshield shop to replace it, using my new weatherstrip and repainted trim pieces.
I can tell you this. the GM weatherstripping that goes up the a-pillars and over the top of the windshield is $250 by itself. So think about what you're getting. :)
My insurance covered my windhsield and I checked the cost on it and it costed about 350 dollars. Eventhough my weatherstripping needs to be replaced they never said one word about it. They just took everything apart real nice and easy and put it back together with a new windhsheild in place. I left the place satisfied with the work they had done. I'd check around if I were you or see if your insurance policy has windshield coverage.
I was planning on the insurance method but I can't. Geico did a pre-insurance inspection and it was noted that the windshield was cracked at that time. I check with the local vette experts and am going with thier reccomendation. $531 with new GM weatherstripping. They are coming to do it tomorrow.
Sounds good. The windshield is an integral structure piece in a C4. Installed incorrectly it can add serious shimmies and shakes to the car and eventually shatter.
With that deal of 531 dollars which includes the new windshield and new GM weatherstripping then I'd day you got a good deal. I'm sure you'll be happy its over with.
