OK Ele. gurus witch I am not, my 93 LT-1 Auto some bolt Ons , started this yesterday, drive 10 miles Bam just like I turned the switch off, everything light up and works (NO FIRE), and can spin the motor nothing on backfire nothing, let set ten min. fires up like nothing happened drive another 10 miles bam dead, let set ten min fires up drive away, I got an H-16 code ,I be thinking the coil is an aftermarket HD one 6-years old am thinking the coil is getting hot shorting out cools off till it gets hot again then shorts out ..??? After it fires backup drives runs great. Till it stops .. ???
A 16 code would indicate an issue with the Opti-Spark. You could be on right track that you have a heat problem causing issue with coil. I'm not sure of the tests you can do to check the coil, but someone will probably come along to advise how to test it.
When it dies, have a noid light ready. Connect it to any fuel injector connector. Under cranking, does the noid flash? If not, optical sensor is bad inside the opti.
A few years back I had a about the same problem same C-4 Code 16 changed everything but the air in the tires yep OPTI coil ( NOT THE IGNITION MODULE ) nothing changed I tested and tested( DAMN ) fire no fire motor ram 5 min die no fire went around and around ,flat bedded it to the old guy in B-HAM he pulled out his TECK 1 BAD plug ,he bent the little plug tongs a little fired up no mo problems till now ( That was over a year back) , so I be thinking anything in the OPTI circuit not befoaming right will throw the O-NO 16 code not saying it is not the OPTI just saying not always the OPTI .. The ignition module is the ORG. 32 years old so got one coming new coil new module find out the OPTI is a US made one a year old, won't be the first one I have had to change one, just another day of owning a C-4 ,YA HA
Got to love it ..RIGHT
Opti spark works different than GM's other ignition systems. Opti sends signal to ecm, not the ignition module. Ecm sends signal to ignition module and turns on injectors. No spark and no noid light blinking = Opti is at fault
This sounds like a case where the opti sensor inside the distributor is failing once it heats up. It can happen: Tom400CFI document this in a thread on this forum some years back. The diagnostic advice is good: noid light tells all. Try to watch your tach when it dies but the engine is still turning (hopefully you're in gear and rolling so you can keep the engine spinning after it conks out). If the tach needle immediately goes off even though the key is still in the RUN position and the engine is spinning, that's another glaring sign that the opti sensor shut off.

Was just saying when the code 16 pops up don't just start removing the OPTI right away it could be something in the OPTI circuit, I be thinking it might be the OPTI ?? going to trying some other stuff first, I read a good article on an ignition module acts the same way gets hot bam cools off like nothing happened, the one on my 93 is the ORG. one so, try new one and new coil if same problem pops up $495.00 later and a hell of a lot of work ,ban back on the road .. The OPTI guy my fav person, NOT
OK DA DA after installing a new Coil and a not so cheap Ignition Module got a new code 41 DAMN got 2 years out of the made in US OPTI not a cheapeee either going with Petris just maybe won't have to chang it out every two years with a better one . Thanks for all the input but like I said got a few years back the old OPTI code but was a bad plug instead, this time not so lucky ..O-WELL ,GM Engen-ear I got idea let's take out the easy to service distributor and put in a nightmare to deal with OPTI, THANKS GM
