My dash is starting to crack all over the place, and new dashs are $400.00 to $500.00! I've seen "dash caps" for $100.00 that are supposed to slip over/glue onto the old dash. Has anyone used them? Are they decent looking and worth it?
Thanks for any info!
Hi drive it,
I got one on mine, they don't look as good as the stock one. But it sure beats the big crack in the dash.
you may not remember it, but it was on the vette when you were here.
mine has puckered some from heat, but still better than whats underneath.
cheaper and easier to put on than a new dash.

Jsut my $.02 - my '89 had one one it when I bought it. During summer heat it developed some bubbles and bumps - looked like s$#t. I removed it and found huge cracks, etc in the original pad. Replacements are very expensive - used ones run $175 or so in good shape. I put on a carpeted dash mat with Velcro. It is smooth and flat, and looks much better than the cap to me and that's what I'm going to stay with for now.
A company called http://www.Justdashes.com restores many older cars dashes and etc.The corvettes they do stop at 1982 currently but I would imagine they may be able to restore the original dash for cheaper than new.Might want to try them and see if they can do so.Maybe soon they will add the 84 and up cars to their line.I plan to send them an email soon and see what they say or if they plan to add the C4 to the list.
:)
I had one in my '79 T/A, it was okay, definately a better alternative, price-wise and PITA-wise, but it didn't look or feel as good as the real one. It fit pretty well though and looked good everywhere except around the gauges, it was a little bit messed up from the install, but that was my fault, not the cover's. i say try it, it'll work out fine, but it won't be as good. :D
I was working in Phoenix when my Vette was delivered several summers ago. After burning my fingers several times on the dash, I ordered a dash mat from the local Chevy dealer for $35.
It looks very nice, has no reflections and covers blems in the dash. I recommend it over the hard dash cover.
4 years ago my dash was perfect. I put a carpeted dash mat on it to keep the sun off. Last summer, for some reason I lifted it up to take a look. Damn crack right through the middle. :mad
Just an update....I tried one of those "dash repair kits" where glue it and put the colored mix in it, then heat it thru textured cloth.
Maybe I'm just not that good at it.....it did fill in the cracks so hoprfully they won't grow, but you can still really see the lines.
And now a carpeted dash mat is on top....."good enuf for who it's for."
:D
