Default Neutral safety switch 4+3.

I have my clutch pedal out of my 84' and I had found the safety switch was by passed and the wire was hanging. Out of curosity I Ohm tested the switch to see if I could tell if it was bad. When the pedal is relaxed it shows nothing then when depressed it shoots up to 15-20 Ohms if I remember correctly does that mean it is functioning correctly? No idea if it is the original switch or not but it does have the old L style plug. Wondering if I should replace it while it easy to do I dont know how ofter these fail.

I would have personally done a continuity check, but this works just as well. Resistance indicates the circuit is closing which should be a good indication that the switch is at least functional.

My neutral start switch was getting lazy on me so I just bypassed it. I instinctively clutch in on starts anyways, so it was not too much of a danger to have it bypassed. But from what you describe, yours should theoretically be in operational condition.

I'm in the process of doing a restore so I dont have power to the car yet which is why I gave it a quick bench test. The car is bypassed currently they cut the plug off and butted them together. I don't worry about me but if my son or someone else might drive it and forget. I may just order a new one and try and find a plug off an old harness to put it back to factory specs to eliminate any flub's!

The switch should measure open (infinite Ohms) when the clutch is engaged (not pressed down) and shorted (0 Ohms) when disengaged (pressed down). 15 to 20 Ohms is bad and indicates that the switch is worn out, dirty, or corroded.

So I bought a new safety switch and was comparing them with the meter. The old one not depressed is reading OUCh which I guess infinite when depressed it reads 47.00 ohms. The new one reads OUCH and halfway thru the cycle it goes 0.0 then fully depressed back to OUCH does that sound right? Or is there a better way to test these before I install?

Well I figured out the new switch was being pushed to far by hand. I mounted it on the pedal and depressed it while watching the meter and it went to 0.0. The old one is still all over the board.

So, does the clutch safety switch work correctly now?

I will not know for a few more weeks waiting on a few parts before I try and fire it up.
