Working on an 85 model and previous owner cut out the vats module and installed a new Rockies bypass kit and it was good till now. Also found where they had installed resistors by the steering column to try and trick the vats, cut these out due to no longer having a module lol.
When i started it was no crank no start with a solid security light, found wire from ignition switch to fuse panel burned out. Replaced ignition switch and wiring to the fuse box, cut out the new Rockies bs and after reading out 85 and 86 model wiring diagrams cut a white wire at the ecm and provided constant ground, pushed power to the distributor b+ pin and it started fine, idled great. Cut the car off and crank no start, verified spark, fuel pump isint cutting on. Bypass fuel pump relay and definitely have good pressure at the rails. Is there something im missing that the ecm wants to see from the nonexistent vats? No more security light, we dont have a door key or the door locks or so jank that the key wont fit anymore.
MFG Date is NOT the same as the model year. As others mentioned, VIN has the actual model year.
Guessing your '86 also has iron heads, as in the valve covers have bolts around the edge. This makes it an "early" '86, later in this run switched to aluminum heads.
