Default ?????? Cleaning Injectors

My car will not start due to clogged injectors, I have replaced the fuel pump and it did start but it sat for a week and it will not start now, Is there a way to clean the injectors enough to get it to start so i can take it somewhere and get them cleaned while they are on the car. I am not ready to replace them just yet, just need to clean them so I can drive it again.

Thanks

Have you measured the fuel pressure? When was the last time the fuel filter was replaced?

Does not start at all - or - only when hot - or - only when cold?

You have Multec injectors, I would not clean them or use fuel injector cleaner additive. Only option (IMO) is to replace. I would buy FMS 24 and get your chip reprogrammed or try 19# FMS injectors if you can find them.

 I find it doubtfull that the injectors could clog up so much that the car wouldn't start! Unles you have had several signs of poor running prior to this.

I agree with PeteL, check the fuel pressure. Here's where we may disagree :blueangel:

I believe you can "clean" injectors (not totally clogged) and keep them clean. I run Amzoil PI, but I also change my fuel filter regularly and throw some 93% Isopropyl alcohol in the tank once a year

The car was just at the shop about 4 weeks ago, I had a code 42 EST and was unsure of what to so it went to the shop, they replaced the fuel pump and the car ran rough because the idiot crossed the plug wires but I got it home and redid the wires, changed the plugs and now the car will not start again like before. Other problems were the car showed no spark at the plugs before so I was unsure of the problem so it went to the shop, so now I am back to where I was before.

Ah, Jack! I'll qualify my post. You have different injectors and different issues. The 89's had Multec injectors and the "innerds" can melt from use of cleaners. Reference a post from David F; also there is a GM TSB on this issue which I can dig up with a lot more work!

C4 Fuel Injectors - David F

89 to 96 are multech injectors which is a jiont design between Bosh and A/C Delco.
85 started out with Bosh but replacements were Lucas and change to higher
pressure fuel pressure regulator. 86 was also a Bosh but were changed to Lucas in
the field due to cloging problems. 87 and 88 were A/C(which were not very reliable
poor meching lead to most having to be replaced because of leaking) but again
were serviced with the Lucas. And 89 started the use of Multech. Now with this
said Bosh is pintel, A/C was a pintel, Lucas is disc and Multech is ball. Pintel are
prone to clogging and deformed spray pattern, disc don't have to much of a problem
with clogging but may have problems with operation with very high fuel pressure.
Mutech don't have a problem with clogging but if the car sits a lot they can
stick(then just give them a rap on the side and in most cases will start working ) but
you are unable to use in the fuel rail cleaners because of the gas cooled coils can be
shorted out if the cleaners wash the insulation off the wires. From what I have see
the Fords have gone to a disc style at least that was true for the last set I installed
on a car. The Accell apear to be a pintel style, I install a set on a friends car and did
not have any problems. Your 91 should have had Mutech injectors and should have
olny been replaced with the same. If you have two different injectors on your car
that in and of it's self could give you problems, it could be that it may have had a
problem with a few of the injectors and instead of rplacing them with the correct
ones they though they could use the early replacement injectors. What color are the
injectors do you have? Bosh are black with a brown top, Lucas are black with a
silver base and a green stripe(some of the early lucas didn't have the green stripe) .
A/C are all blace thinner then the Lucas and a long thin baseof silver. Multech are
fat light gray with a silver base.

Miss David's posts on this board, what an great source of real honest experience he provided to us C4 nutz.

Jack knows David, but newby's should search and commit to memory David's posts!

Brett, 42 is usually caused by disconnecting the "timing set" wire to set the timing. But also can be a problem with the module in the ignition module. Fuel problems are not really associated with the 42 code.

In an 89 I would amagine if the 42 keeps comming back, that you have a problem with the ignition module or a bad ECM. 89 ECM's are famous for failure, if you determine your's has been better get a factory replacement (new number, not an aftermarket rebuild) from GM - I recommend Jeff Koop as a source for discounted real GM parts.

I also strongly recommend you obtain a shop manual http://www.helminc.com. On a budget from Motorbooks: "How to tune and Modify Chevrolet Fuel Injection" by Ben Watson. Ben's book is great, but can be more confusing when trying to determine year specific problems!
