L98 Sensor Reading and Tuning
1) What is the easiest way to read codes/sensor data, I was going to get any obd1 to usb cable I could find but I’m reading I might need a ALDL cable adapter, if anyone could shed some light or link a brand/product that would work the best.
2) I would like to modify the L98, to produce more horsepower (idk exactly how much I want to achieve but I’m trying to not carb it or just replace it), but I am trying to figure out when to tune it, and I am honestly just confused on what the upper limits of the stock ECM is and when that switch over should happen, so I’m not replacing the chip every time I make a mod. If anyone has any recommendations for this issue that would be amazing, I am a little lost in the first place to start.
The only issue with these ECM's is that they can be sensitive to modifications. But it depends on how much modification.
Larger runners and base? Change the mufflers? Add headers? Bigger throttle body? Port the plenum? Probably leave the ECM alone. You could retune to potentially optimize a bit, but it'll run just fine without that.
Change the cam/heads? Change the injectors? Definitely need to re tune.
Things that significantly alter the fuel/airflow characteristics will need a re-tune.
The newer ECMs self learning and adapability that make them a little more user friendly. But in the hands of someone who knows there way around these older ECMs, there's really no limit on them.
But I agree with Incorvettei.... you need to figure what your goals are first. Do what you want to the engine... the ECM can be made to work with it.
if your not planning to pull the chip every time you can use a ostrich 2 emulator. Or it’s not bad to modify the memcal and use a header under it. I usually solder in a flash eeprom into the memcal and a header adapter can go under it to go in a burner.
