Default Clutch keeps dying

Hey guys, I have a 1995 six speed and the clutch keeps going out. When I got it the clutch was bad so I replaced it. Later down the line on new years this year I had a coolant leak which leaked on the clutch and completely smoked it. And now with less then 500 miles on the new clutch it’s beginning to slip again.
It’s not on engagement but if I giver some beans (not to crazy just getting up to speed or doing a pull) it slips like crazy. I can put it into gear and leave the clutch in and it doesn’t go anywhere so I don’t think it’s engaging all the time. And I’m not riding the clutch all the time I know better than that.
Now I’m kind of ignorant when it comes to any clutch system so I could have done something wrong when it comes to installing it. Mine also did not have the sheet metal guard that came standard on them. So I was thinking that might have something to do with it. But I’m sick of spending 500+ and a day of work replacing a part that should last quite a while. So if y’all could help that would be great.

I’m not sure what was in it before I replaced it. And I replaced it with a rock auto clutch.

do u have any pictures?

when u replaced your clutch, did u re-use the pressure plate or the flywheel?

these cars had a dual mass flywheel and a pull style pressure plate from factory. they are a beautiful thing.

however its hard to source proper parts to keep them stock.

You may have removed the dual mass setup, and replaced it with a single mass setup from rockauto. it would be nice to know what you originally removed. Do you still have any of the originally removed parts and do u have any lics or a link to what was installed?

Sounds like you are missing some clamping force.

[QUOTE=VikingTrad3r;1609464128]do u have any pictures?

I did reuse the fly wheel but not the pressure plate. And no I dont, however I do have a photo of the fly wheel and a link to the clutch and plate I bought. I bought the m-pact clutch kit part number 04142. Reading the description it says it is for use in a dual mass flywheel. And here is the photo of the fly wheel
The photo is not great sorry
The photo is not great sorry

I was thinking about upgrading to the

McLeod Super StreetPro Clutch Kits

And a

Centerforce Billet Steel 153-Tooth Flywheel

if y’all have any options on it

OK, well, kudos for attempting to retain your dmf setup.

I always do the same. And, all i buy a friction disk……

while retaining the factory dmf (as long as it passes the wear test —oit of 6 ZF’s ive only ever had 1 fail) and pressure plate.

The only thing i can think about your current setup—which im understanding to be a retained the original dmf

with an aftermarket solid (unsprung) friction disk and then an aftermarket pull type pp (mpact)…

only thing i can think is the mpact friction disc is too thin out of the box…..(i have calipered many to see wear) or / and the aftermarket pressure plate has too tall of standoffs, resulting in not enough clamping force on the disc when sandwiched together.

are you sure you do not have your original pressure plate and friction dosc? if yes, we could caliper a few measurements to see how badly worn the pp was. 95% of the time the factory pp is just fine. Its just the friction disc that needs to be replaced.

That looks like a smoked DMF to me. My wife has a Mk7 Golf that we bought with 70K miles on it so we had no idea how it was driven. 50K later I had to replace the clutch. Within 6 months, I had to replace it again and identified the DMF as the culprit. When I had the new one next to the old one, you could easily tell that the springs in the old DMF were worn the heck out. Since replacing the clutch and DMF, no issues.

Also, looking at your pilot bushing, it is clear there was some misalignment there. I would replace that too.

Im not sure how you can tell a flywheel is “smoked” from that picture, but im open to learning if you see something

Heat marks are the dead give away. Plus the dust build up. The car I was referencing looked just like that and it was flat out smoked. I guarantee you that if you put a new one next to it, you could see the difference. Then when you try to move the internal part of the flywheel, you will feel how sloppy the old one is by comparison. Plus, I see rust too.

The LT motors are externally balanced. Hence Pressure plate is balanced for your engine and flywheel. That flywheel looked rough but really hard to tell from pic. You can measure free play of flywheel to determine if ok. There are machine shops that can resurface, mine was not bad, used red scotch brite. Bought the disc from mpac ( part of Carolina clutch) no issue.
the plates are critical, where are they? I would get replacements. Kentucky clutch remans stock units I heard, have not used them personally. Call Bill, ZF doc. Google him, he knows his stuff! Helped me. Mine runs amazing!
worth a call to Bill.
watch out for aftermarket push types. Without shim kit (Bill sells) the tranny will sound like a can of rocks.
hope this helps!
