Default Advice for header install

I got a set of used headers recently and should be having them installed soon. IS there anything I should know, or tips, things to make sure of, etc? :confused

I am not positive about a 89 but on my 90 the fuel lines were close to the headers and had to be moved a little. I also put heat protective material on the fuel lines. I also used a starter shield and covered any wires that were close to the headers with cool tube.

All good ideas. Another thing that I found is that for me (on my '87 w/ a ZF trans) I found it easiest to install the driver's side header up through the bottom, and the passenger's side down through the top. I've removed and installed them both going both ways on both sides, and found the above method easiest. If you're going to bring it up from the bottom on the passenger's side, I found it MUCH easier if you remove the coolant temp sensor on the head, otherwise the header flange has a tendency to hang up on it.

all of the above

...and if it is TPIS headers with the slide on front Y pipe, dont tighten the headers to the heads until you have installed, secured the CAT and the rear Y pipe. If you tighten down the headers first, you wont be able to slide on the Y since the pipes are angled into the collector.

Thanks! I ordered the cool tubes and blanket. I bought the headers off of ebay thanks to a post here on the forum. Due to the weather I'm going to have a mechanic install them for me but I wanted to make sure I had everything ready for him.

Install is very easy on headers. Starter removal makes pass side go in alot easier from underneath. Only 2 bolts hold it(and the 3 electrical connections)
Maybe paint the spark plug boots with high temp paint. Use the nice copper gaskets or the aluminum!
PLEASE do yourself a favor and fabricate a bracket for the back of the alternator. The stock bracket will not work anymore as the #1 primary tube won't let it bolt up anymore. You'll see when you get them on. I ran without a bracket for about a year and the vibration finally broke the alternator case and threw the belt
Weld in O2 bung in a collector.
Got the 6 speed? Switch the O2 sensor to the passenger side collector. Much more room over there(no slave).
Thinking about wrapping with that thermo tec wrap? Use 2 rolls.
Easy with the dipstick tube. It can be REAL finnicky going back in!!!!
You'll need shorter header bolts.
Hex headed header bolts from "Spectre" brand helped me quite a bit especially at rear #8.
