Default C4 Air Dam Fix

Previous owner beat the tar out of the front air dam intake for my '86. Removed and ordered a replacement from Top Flight Automotive, but it doesn't seem to fit in the slightest (despite the listing saying it would lol).

I noticed how bashed in the mount was, any solutions for fixing or replacing this mounting? Since I'm new to owning a C4, all the videos online show another body panel across the radiator above the mounting bar: I think I'm missing it?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Edit: Thank you to all the replies! Great information. Hopefully I will follow up with a nice repaired picture!

Yup, you're missing some parts and that lower piece is pretty torn up. It's a pain to replace it, but if it's gotten brittle along with the tears then it's replace it not repair it time. Then go to a junk yard to collect the other missing pieces.

As a starting point from your attached photo, below are some of the components with their names and part numbers to start your searches. Also, take note of the screws and hardware needed to correctly fasten. I hope this is some information that leads in the right direction.

Baffel, Rad Air Lwr - GM part# 14078642
Retainer, Rad Air Lwr Baffel - GM Part# 14043167

Deflector, Frt Air Center - GM Part# 14089634

The above will likely will be discontinued from GM, but may be available via used or aftermarket suppliers.

It should look something like this. Pictures are of my 1996, and these are all original GM parts. Installation note--the bolts that attach the center section are installed pointing down, so the black bolt heads are above, and the zinc-finish nuts are on the underside. The side air dam pieces overlap in front of the center section. My experience is that reproduction air dam pieces do not fit correctly. GM part numbers (for 1991-1996 cars):
Left air dam 10149263
Right air dam 10149264
Center air dam 10149265
Original parts have these numbers molded into the plastic on the back side.

Also, I was recently able to purchase a complete set of 1991-1996 NOS (or NOS equivalent) air dam mounting hardware from Just Corvettes via eBay.

Should someone want to fab this up, it doesn't look too difficult to do. I would think some aluminum sheet would do the trick.

The structure that the center spoiler attaches to is the lower radiator shroud/mount. The OP's is torn at both ends and the metal reinforcement is bent and distorted.

The lower shroud is replaced from above after removing the upper shroud, fan assembly, radiator and a/c condenser. Lot of work. And requires obtaining a replacement from (probably) one of the C4 salvagers such as Dino or Mirrock. The shipping charge on the oversize package is going to be substantial in addition to the price of the part. Does the car's current condition and owner's desires warrant spending the time and money? Perhaps fabbing up braces for the torn corners and pop riveting them to the existing shroud will suffice. Straighten the bent reinforcement. Install an aftermarket reproduction spoiler available almost everywhere.

There is supposed to be a body-colored deflector in the opening of the 84-90. (The pics of the 96 do not show this deflector, because the 91-96 don't have it.) I doubt it is reproduced.

EDIT/ADD: This guy needs a pic of an intact 84-90 center spoiler and cooling air inlet to see what his car and opening should look like. I looked through my pics and I don't have any. My 85 is in storage 150 miles away, or I would take one for him.

EDIT/ADD II: I thought of this:

Here. The pic at the bottom is of a 1984-1990 cooling air inlet. From the 1990-1991 NCRS Judging Reference Manual

On my 1996 car, the transverse piece onto which the plastic air deflector center section is mounted is fabricated from sheet steel formed into a C-section. (The 1996 factory service manual uses the term "air deflector" for what I've been calling the air dam. I'll use the service manual's term for the rest of this post). The upper part of the air deflector center section curves above this piece of metal and is attached to it by the black bolts and zinc nuts I mentioned. The service manual's term for the transverse metal piece is "radiator lower air baffle." Because it's covered by the air deflector center section, the radiator lower air baffle isn't visible in the pictures I posted. Unfortunately, even the 1996 service manual doesn't seem to have a great drawing of this piece.

Sorry if this description and the pictures of my car aren't that useful. Evidently there are significant differences in the design of this area between 84-90 and 91-96 cars.

Here's a pic of my 86. I modified the air dam with a heat gun to scoop in more air otherwise this is what your's would typically look like-minus the trans cooler and pusher fan.
