the FAQ sticky post (top post of scan and tune page) is a good starting point.
be prepared for lots of reading.
to help you out, you can stick mainly to articles about MAF and the 165 ecm (since thats what your 86 has in it). the speed density stuff is for later models and anything about HEX code is for the die hard rewriter's (not really needed if your doing moderate modifications).
the Thirdgen site has lots of info and a good search engine for finding it. but be forwarned most people don't answer genralized questions (questions that have been asked 100's of times in the past) so get used to doing search's. of course if you get stuck or don't understand something thats different. to explain this in more detail: it would take a massive book to tell everything about all the different setup's and how to tune them, and we can't expect anyone to type all that into a response everytime so thats why there are sticky posts and web pages on different parts of the process.

its not real hard to do, you just have to do some homework first. then get the stuff and start playing (carefully that is, small change, test for results then repeat). you want to keep good records of each change.
