TDC FOR 1986
I had the engine set to TDC by the machine shop when they built the motor. All I have to do is put the distributer in. Is there a way of making sure the distributer is set right. I did try several times to set it but I could never get the rotor to point directly where spark plug wire number one was at. The little notch on top of the oil pump kept moving. I did not have any push rods installed while I was trying to set the distributor.

If you are dead sure that your engine is at TDC #1, then just insert a long screwdriver into the distributor access hole and turn the oil pump shaft until it is where you want it. Insert the distributor and as you lower it, it will engage in the oil pump drive slot. If you don't hit it right the 1st time, remove it and try again. The distributor rotor rotates as it engages the cam gear, so a couple of trys might be necessary.
