I spent a couple of hours installing my new EM headers today. We didnt get started until 4 after my friend closed his shop today so we got alot of stuff done. We removed the manifolds and all of the other junk(ie AC compressor, alt. spark plugs, dipstick, old exhaust) and got the headers into place and bolted up. The passenger side is absolutely perfect no clearance problems or anything but the drivers side is a different story we got it in and I have so issues with the fitment around the engine mount bolt but I think when I get them torqued it will be out of the way but the collector hits the fiberglass bucket under the driver seat so I need to trim about 3/4 of an inch off the end of the collector to allow for a angled piece of pipe to fit and clamp to the collector. I dont have any pics, forgot the camera at home, but I will take plenty tomorrow to show everyone what I am talking about. Anyway I am done for tonight and should be done around 2-3 tomorrow and I will post pics of the complete finish.
No Y-pipe to install all I really have left is torqing the header bolts sparkplugs which are a breeze now, reinstalling the AC compressor and the Alt. While I am doing all of that my friend is going to be haning the all new exhaust so with us both should only take 3 hrs or so. We had everything down and out of the way and ready for in headers in 45 min last night. Yes we are timing ourselves.
Here are some of the pics I have taken since I have installed the headers. I left my camera at home on both days so I didnt get any good pics with everything out or while it was on the lift but I have a few that I have taken since I have had it back in the garage. I still need to get a new oil dipstick and fab something to replace all the washers I used to extended original manifold bolt to keep the AC and Alt brackets from vibrating. I also need to order the analog temp gage sensor since it got broken during the removal of the manifolds. Small price to pay I guess it could be worse. I didnt have any fitment problems one the driver side like I thought I was going to have after I cut down the motor mount bolt and everything cleared like a dream. I did notch out a little chunk on the passenger side angle brace just to give it a little more clearance to keep from rubbing. Other than that I have no problems and absolutelu love them and for anyone that is going to be installing these be sure and turn around the mount bolt or cut it down a little bit.
So your clearance to the frame (actual frame, not k-member) on the passenger side is good?
About your washer situation:
Home Depot (cheaper) or Sears Hardware: 1/16" thick, 1/2" diameter aluminum tubing looks like it would be perfect for making a standoff (spacer). Just cut to length. That's what I got earlier today, I'm waiting on some other parts so I haven't actually done it yet, just an idea.
Yeah I didnt have any clearance issues with the frame whatsoever. You will have to turn around the motor mount bolt on the drivers side or just cut it which is what I did since the header was already halfway installed. I have a friend who is a machinist on base so he is going to fab me up something out of 6061 stock and shave down one side to make it fit so it will look a lot better just need a couple of more days of a little TLC. Good luck with your install it took me and my friend 6 hrs from roll on to roll off and almost 2 hrs just on the pipe bending and welding of the x-pipe and mufflers. He is a perfectionist when it comes to his welding and bending so he kept doing it over and over again but it looks great so I am not about to complain.
I just found out that my header install is done. I can't wait until Friday, when I head to PA to pick up the car. The guy doing it said the passenger side fit fine, but he had a real problem aligning the driver side header with the corsa catback. They did some fab work and finally got the drivers side header aligned with the cat back. He also said that it seemed like the air tube fittings were not on the right tubes for my car. But everything is hooked up now, and the cats are history.
They also said I am definitely gonna Notice a difference in the sound!
The way he said made me a little nervous, but I like a good rumble.
I just hope I don't go deaf.
So, for you guys that have em on already, How do they sound?
I had an all new exhaust fabricated at the same time I did the headers. Did them in a muffler shop(the guy in the pic did the passenger side and all of the exhaust bending and welding). We had a fitment issue with the drivers side engine mount bolt touching the header but once that was solved I didnt have an issues what so ever. I put on Mangaflow mufflers designed for the C4 the same time I did the headers so the sound is much better and a lot more tuned sounding with hardly any resonance. Acceleration smoothed out a lot and I can feel a lot more torque is being produced I plan on going to the Dyno on Fri to see exactly how much horsepower and torque I gained. I did before tests and now I will do the after runs.
