Default Throttle body

What does it do exactly? Who would benefit from an increased TB size?

a throttle body governs how much air is sucked into the engine, by increasing the size you will allow more volume of air to enter

Would anyone benefit from a larger TB or just those with bigger cubes and/or heavily modified cars?

I plan on possibly getting a SC setup, so I'll probably need a larger TB. What's the stock size TB? 52mm?

Stock size is 48mm, you dont need a bigger TB until you go with larger engines or SC.

Well I will most likely go with a SC and figured I'd go with a 58mm. Just planning the future build is all. :smash:

I recently swapped on a 58mm in place of the stock 48mm.
With no other changes, I lost smooth throttle application from stops. Light will turn green and no matter how softly I apply gas pedal, it's like WOT launch! This is from a Lingenfelter TB. Very nicely made item with smooth spring tension.
Gave me my best ET and MPH tho! :D

heres what you have to remember. With the the bigger throttle body, it will increase volume of air entering the intake. which means reduced velocity. I noticed when i did this last year on my stock motor the throttle response wasnt there. Now one thing you have to be certain about is adjusting those throttle cables. When i first had the 52mm on, the throttle blades would only open 3/4 of the way. I couldnt understand why top end was so dead. Anyhow, theyre good for high revving motor (ala ZR1) and big strokers. I think i saw a post on here saying that a 58mm TB is too big unless you have a 383 that turns 9000 rpms... try searching throttle body.. im sure you'll find the post.

I moved up to 52 mm, from LPE, significant impovemnt in rwft and an inrease in rwhp. I burn up the meats at a standing start, really a great mod!

Made me smile! :D

Sorry to jump in here but I have the same type of question. Would a car like mine benefit from a 52mm throttle body? My mods are K&N filter w/open lid, Corsa cat back exhaust. If so, how much of an increase do you think?

Vader86 is right!!!!!

He helped me with my problem. I also upgraded for a stock TB to a 58mm and have had nothing but problems. Too much air for a stock engine.

Thanks again vader86 :auto:

Lord Odin,
Based on what I see in your signature, I would not go to a 58MM TB.

I believe your stock engine is running a 48MM TB (as mentioned above).

For you to go to a 58MM TB, I think you would need to be running a much improved camshaft, and heads or head-work, in order to take full advantage of that TB.

The other things that concerns me about your Vette, and going to a larger TB,
is the fact that you have a 4 speed Automatic, and worst of all 2:73 gears.

I'm afraid with this present set-up, your Vette would 'bog, and fall all over itself' once you nailed it...if you have the 58MM TB installed. (Too much air getting into the engine, and not enough gearing to get the power to the rear wheels quick enough).

TB's are not cheap, so what I would suggest, is to sit down and write out what mods you want to do to your car, and in what order. Where do you want this Vette (performance wise) to be, 2 or 3 years from now? Will you still own it?
Do some 'homework' first. Don't buy parts just to buy them, and then find out a few months later...all these parts you've been buying up and installing the past several months...aren't working together as you invisioned.

Remember this about TB's...bigger does not always make better. They can hurt performance, as well as improve it.

You have to have the proper gearing, and very good engine power to take full advantage of larger TB's.

Suggest you look to install some gearing first, and then a 52MM TB.

You could go to a 3:45 or 3:54 gearing (not sure exactly...someone else chime in).

Good Luck!!!
