I've got a 95 383 with a 4L60E. I had the transmission built when I built the 383. I have been very pleased until I bought drag radials. I've been running it on street tires at the track with terrible traction problems. So, I bought BFG drag radials.
I went to the track today. I heated the tires and staged. It left hard (1.6 60 foot) but didn't shift to second normally. Hit rev limiter then finally shifted. Same thing on shift to third.
Stopped to get time slip. When I went to pull away it slipped the torque convertor alot. Stopped again pulled it down to 1 and it pulled away normal. It wasn't down shifting to first.
I made 3 more passes. I tried shifting it myself and I tried running in OD. All with the same results. I quit before breaking something.
I aired the tires back up to 30 pounds and headed for home. Car drove and shifted fine. I found a abandoned road and made a run. With tires cold and spinning car pulled great and shifted perfect.
I have a vigilante torque convertor (2800rpm). I drove the rest of the way home (130 miles) with no problems.
It sounds to me like you may have heated up the clutch pack, or the bands did you notice what your tranny temp was after the run?
It sounds like once you allowed the trans to cool some driving home, it returned to normal. If you don't have an auxillary trans cooler I'd invest in one... With the drag radials, the slip will go to the weakest link... which is the clutches and bands.

I'll add that the 4L60E is extremely sensitive to fluid level. Too low and too much will give shifting problems. :yesnod:
If the fluid level was slightly low, (even if dipstick is reading correctly), this can happen. You have picked up air, which can allow a no-shift condition. Try overfilling the transmission by about 2/3 of a quart. If this solves the problem, remark the dipstick to the correct level. Let me know?
After the first pass I did start watching the trans temp. The highest I saw was 208. The last pass it was 195 when I staged and 204 after the run.
I keep the fluid level in the middle of the dipstick range. But, I do have a higher capacity pan. Maybe the range is off. I will try it with the level higher.
Thanks very much for the input. I hope this helps. This kept me awake for awhile last night.
thanks for your help. This evening I checked the fluid level very carefully. With the trans fluid temperature at 180 the level is 1/8" above the high mark mark for 190 temperature. So, it is slightly high. I'm woundering if the fluid is sloushing to the rear of the pan and causing cavatation. Maybe I should go back to a normal capacity pan?
You say that you have a deeper pan on it now? Where does the filter sit in relation to the bottom of the pan? (distance) Is it the same as stock?, or is there more distance from the filter to the botom of the pan?
Probuilt,
I don't know. The pan was installed by the transmission builder. I was woundering the same thing.
I called Ed Wright today and he said he could fix it in the programming. They are very tight lipped. Wouldn't explain how. They just said," send it back and they we will take care of it".
Pro built,
Ed wright said they could take care of the problem, so I sent the computer back for reprogramming. They reprogrammed it and sent it back next day service with no charge to me. But, I'm still having the same problem. I went to the track last night. Two more runs with no change.
I will pull the trans pan today and look at the relationship of the filter and the bottom of the pan. I tried adding 2/3 of a quart more trans fluid before second run. Could it be to full?

The 4L60E is very picky about the correct amount of fluid and can have the symptoms you describe.
