as the topic says, i get some sort of ticking or tapping from the engine when i push the peddle to the floor. before this didn't happen. just recently. i hope i didn't break anything.. haven't even had the car up to 4k yet.. just 3 times at 3.5k or so. any advice on what to fix or how to trouble shoot? it might not be a tick or tap sound.. its kind of hard to describe. seems to get worse if it is a heady accelation, if i slowly press the peddel, the sound is not as bad. the only other time ive heard this sound before was on our honda accord when i droped it to 2nd instead of 4th and hit 6.6k (never went over 3, it didnt get any faster higher up) ----- any ideas?
btw, its a 87 with 120k miles. the 93 accord was around 70k.
Could be a lifter "tic." Every chevy 350 I have ever owned with over 80k has had it. Make sure your oil is full. If the heads aren't getting enough oil it can cause a tic.
Another problem could be a leaking exhaust manifold gasket.
Pop the hood and try to find where the noise is coming for. The only thing is that bother problems are louder under full load, so its hard to tell by just reving it in nuetral. See if hard acceleration up a steep hill makes it loader.
yes, up a big hill the sound will get louder.
i was thinking bad gas? ( had a friend that carpools pay and he put in the cheap stuff)
will this kind of thing break/ kill the car?
why does it get worse under more load?
---------------
sub topic: is there anything wrong with staying in a gear that long?(3k rpms)
[i use to shift around 1.5k but i think the car likes me shifting around 2k better, and a burst takes me to 3k... or more if i know it wont break the car..]
I don't think it was the gas. If you can rev the engine while holding one side of a screwdrive to the valve cover and the other side to your ear, I'll bet you'll find your tic. And make sure to check the oil.
One more thing; is the noise worst before the engine warms up?
yes the noise is worse before it get warm.
but before just a week or so ago, it was nonexistent.
EDIT: when you say rev an engine, how often? like.. every other light? (not that i do that.. another friend does with his truck)
EDIT2: ill try listening for the tick when its in the driveway, but i don't think i will find it just idling, and i dont have a hand i trust (or foot) to rev it up.

I'd invest in a Mechanics Stethocope, you can get them at Sears. They are cheap (under $20.00 i beleive) and accurate at pinpointing noise/sound. I had a buddy who used to use a screwdriver...till his hair got caught in the AC compressor. It didn't seriously hurt him but, it did scare the crap out of him.
might be pinging......put some higher octane in it and see if it stops....
:iagree:
My truck is doing this now where it didn't used to. It came on slowly. I am going to have to put some super juice in to see if it gets better. Might be dirty plugs, timing a bit off, knock sensor going bad ????
If you already use 93 octane the add a bottle of 104 to see what happens
If it is worse cold, I would suspect an exhaust leak. When the metal expands as the engine warms, the leak becomes smaller and quieter. I would suggest taking a section of heater hose and putting one end to your ear and the other in the area of the exhaust manifolds and see if you can hear a leak. Also check your EGR tube for leaks, if you have the old style they are very prone to leaks because of the cheesy clamp GM used to attach the tube to the exhaust manifold on the passenger side. There has been some discussion here on the forum about when GM went to the newer EGR pipe which uses two torx bolts at this connection, and it appears that it might have been changed in the middle of the '87 production year.

:iagree: BUT a lifter will also be noise until it get fully lubed. And I still don't think its the gas. He said he's only reved to 3k. With the stock compression ratio it wouldn't knock until 4-4.5k, even with 87.
Does sound like it may be a exhaust manifold leak. If you have no one to press the gas pedal in park try a brick, you may be able to then determine which side of your motor the tick comes from, then see if you have some black coloration on one spot of the manifold, that is an indication of a leak, You may also try to tighten you manifold bolts, working form the center out, alteranting sides. If you find a loose one repeat tightening sequence. If porblem persists try copper gaskets.
Re: ticking under high acceleration (Beautiful Beast)
well the sound has gone. i think it was both some very bad crapy gas and a little cold plus the oil was about a quart low. (i got a leak !)
and i have thoes copper manifold gaskets. thanks for the good ideas, but
i had filled up at some gas station that was 20 cents cheaper then the rest... and i was kinda wondering about that. yesterday i went and filled up 16 gallons of the 93 for $2 a gallon, and the $32 seems to be worh it.
now all i gota fix is a whine in the middle of the engine (??? wtf) along with the other items on my page and a half woth of TO-DO stuff :cuss  :D
