I have the hot cam set up, and I really have not yet broke the engine in, yet. When I do, I will go with a different chip and headers. My questions are:
1: What is the 4.10 gear all about? I know ratios, and all, this gear sounds rather torquey, with a low range for first gear, right?
2: Does this mod make since for a comfortable street ride?
3: How costly is this mod?
4: How timely is this mod?
I have 4.10's in my LT4 and I really like them. They actually allow me to USE the 6-speed, especially 6th gear. I can still cruise at about 80mph sitting around 2100rpm and the 1st-3rd gear acceleration was a HUGE difference! I forget what it cost, I think it was around 850-900$ and took about 3 days to get it done. Well worth it in my opinion!
First, you have to determine if your engine will benefit from operating in a higher rpm range. With your cam/engine, sounds like it will. Second, the numerically higher gear will multiply the engine's torque to a greater degree than your stock gears. Simply put, you should change gears in everything you drive, including your lawnmower! It's the single greatest relatively cheap mod you can do to any car.
Robey5,
I would say, go for it.
Sometime in the near future, I'd like to have a 4:10 gear installed in my '86.
I just checked my records, and I bought my 3:75 gears from Drive Train Specialists, November of '93.
The cost for the gears was $325, and I paid another $99 for the Installation Kit. My mechanic installed them for me for $200. Keep in mind, this was 1993
dollars. I would imagine today you would pay under $1000 for this job.
Is it worth it? I'd say: "yes", but that is based on my preference for 'quick off the line starts' versus 'top end speed'.
Oh yeah, once you get into it...you'll be pulling 2nd gear within 1.8 seconds.
I personally think it will make for an easier drive around town, but you may sacrifice a few 'miles to the gallon'.
As far as time to complete this mod...depends on the experience your mechanic has. Personally, I would not want this job rushed. It must be done right, including the 'shimming' part of the job. (6 hours to complete is probably a comfortable time frame for most knowledgeable mechanics).
If you do this gear change...don't forget to change out your 'Speedometer Gear.
4:10 should be installed from the factory. I put them in my 95. When I bought the GS I drove it home stock and thought it was a slug with out the gears. I put them in the first weekend after buying it. ( I actually ordered them before we picked the car up)
The comments here should be close to the same for your LT1. The previous owner for my corvette had this option done last year along with the drain plug option as well. You can certainly use all gears around town.

Can I get an Amen?!?!!?

3.73's in the Impala
4.10's in the Vette
Regular push mower, no chance for lower gears :(
