Is the engine on center?
I'm marking the hood on my 84 so I can daylight it for air filter clearance (it has a carb; long story). I used a long air cleaner stud with a dab of paint to mark the underside of the hood. The mark comes out about an inch to right of center, towards the passenger side.
So is the engine on center or is it just hood flex? I'm presuming the carb/intake is centered on the engine.

It is off center to allow more foot-space for the driver....
It really shows up when you look at the clearance between the frame rails and the headers.....
