Can somebody please tell me how much weight there should be on the hood? I don't know if my assist rams are shot or not but while bent over the engine last night, the thought occured to me that if that nice little silver buttom on the hood support were to break, I woulldn't be too comfortable. Mine requires about a 30 lb. pull to open the hood.
The hood support rod on my 87 no longer assists me in putting the hood up or down. I would say it takes about 50lbs to raise or lower mine. It locks in place, but that's all. It's a handful getting it down with dropping hard. The man support rod is an expensive piece to replace!
The hood is pretty heavy, if it were to drop on you, it would pretty much ruin your day....

Mine has the same problem, i even had the hood fall on me before......that really hurt. Mine is missing the small support and it is as expensive as the big one is.
I just replaced the two struts on mine with ones from Napa. Was very heavy up and down, now the scissor strut doesn't hold any weight, the struts keep is topped out. Cost - about $35.00 for both.
Please, post thoose part #'s. I think I'll replace the ones on my 87.
I think the change to the single gas-charged rod was done in 91. My 92 doesn't have the two small ones, and a buddy upgraded his 90 ZR-1 to the single strut.
For my 86 the Napa part number is 819-5311, two required. They were 17.99 each plus tax.
Also if you have weak later large struts, talk to Jeff Kopp. I will probably get the later model hood prop hardware from him after I get this thing back together.
