Does it go up by itself? When I was at the Eureka Springs Corvette Weekend last October, a gentelman popped his '94's hood and it went all the way up by itself. I remarked to Gordon Killibrew about how neat that was, and he kinda looked at me funny and said "they all do that". Mine never has, and I was wondering if it's just my car, or it's a common occurance. Doesn't bother me enough to shell out the ~$100 for new support rod and the little hydraulic helpers.
Saw another thread about hoods and it got me thinkin'

Re: When you pop your hood..... (JF_AH_64)
I get a workout every time I lift the hood.
The older c4s like mine don't have the gas shock hood support... just some little ones up front. But these don't seem to help at all. What are they for?
It just doesn't seem right that it takes that much force to lift. No help from springs or anything. Definitely not intended for little old ladies.
Mine pops up 4 inches or so, but i have to lift it the whole way.
I don't think i've EVER seen one that pop's all the way up :skep:
No seriously, it did! I was amazed, lol. It was the probably one of the neatest things I've seen on a car, looked really cool. Now that I've been thinking about it tonight, and it's been confirmed, I might just spring for all new hardware. :D

Post here what you find out .... how it's done, what's involved, etc. I want to know more about this.
My hood was an exercise to open till I replaced those 2 little cylinders up front. Boy what a difference they made. Guess the gas escapes over time. My origonal hood strut wasn't gas charged & I replaced that one with a gas filled one and now I go for a ride every time I open the hood. Make a good catapult now.
Mine just has the single strut that locks once it's always open. i still have to pick it up. where can i get the kit to make it open itself? please post a link or some pics of the installed result.
A word of advise here, I bought a new hood from GM, it came with all of the hardware to do the conversion with the exception of the gas cylinder. I thought I would save a few bucks and went to the parts store and purchased the store brand gas cylinder for a '96. I went home and put it on and closed the hood. I pulled the handle to open the hood again, and ... nothing, the hood would not open. I began looking at the hood, and it was bowed up in the middle. I started to freak out, my brand new hood with fresh paint, now stuck closed and bowed up over the fender well. With some help from my wife and a long pry bar we were able to get ot open. Whew!
The next day I took of the striker plates and tried it again. It turns out the cylinder was to long and was pushing the hood over to the right, causing it to lock closed.
I guess the moral of the story is, buy the GM parts if you want it to be right.
:nonod:
Nope, my 96 does not lift all the way up. Just pops up a few inches and I have to lift it the rest of the way. Tho it would be nice to have it go all the way up. I think it would at a minimum require another gas strut to be added to the passenger side.
I upgraded my 86 to the strut configuration and replaced my gas cylinders at the same time. The gas cylinders take all the work out of lifting it, you just need to give it a little push to get going.
I am not sure I would want mine to pop open all by itself, could be a safety hazard. Hard to see around that big hood, ya know? If you were moving along, the windstream would most likely keep it down, but I would think it a bit embarassing if it popped up at a stop light.
