So as it sits right now, I've worked on it for about 5 hours today. I was able to take all the accessories off (alternator, smog pump, power steering pump, water pump) As well as pull the carb and the distributor. I've gotten off 2 of the 5 (but the 5th one was actually missing, dunno why?) bellhousing-to-motor bolts off. Got the exhaust off and all the wiring out of the way. The only thing left for THIS motor to come out is:
1.) Connect eyebolts to cherrypicker chain.
2.) Winch it up
3.) Support Tranny, & Unbolt torque converter from flexplate.
4.) Unbolt Bellhousing-to-motor bolts
5.) Unbolt motor mount bolts.
6.) Pull motor out!
AASN: What do you guys think of my chain/eyebolt setup. Here's how it is
Chain = Rated for 1250lbs
Eyebolts = Dunno, but the connecting links on them to the chain, are rated at 880lbs a piece. The eyebolts are threaded into each corner exhaust manifold bolt hole (four total bolts) I'll snap some pics as I get it out 2moro.
Wish me luck! Also, if there's anything I left out, lemme know please!
:cheers:
On your engine hoist setup, I used the accessory bolt holes on the ends of the heads, which gave me more front/back stability with the motor, plus it kept the chain away from valvecovers and whatnot.
Also, do NOT use eye-bolts. They will bend like nobody's business, and could very possibly break from the bending stresses. I would grab a couple of plates of flat bar (if you have nothing else) and drill two holes in them. One to bolt flat to the head, and the other to bolt to a link in the chain.

:eek: Thanks for telling me that!! I actually HAVE nothing else...so I guess I'll go get some steelbar with holes already in it (seen it at the store already) I guess it's back to home depot. The guy where I got the motor said I COULD use eyebolts. Hmm..guess I'll just have to get other 5/16" bolts and go back to the drawing board...

Yeah, we have a set of lifting eyes here at the shop that were made out of 5/16" thick flat bar, similar to what I'm suggesting, and those bent under the load as well, but because of the orientation of the bar, it isn't a problem.
Looking good Tim. Good suggestion on not using eyebolts, you don't want that ***** to suddenly drop....would spoil your day, particularly if it happens to be above your foot at the time. Just lift the motor out slowly and have a helper watch for any wires, lines, etc that hang up as it's coming out. You're almost there.... :hurray:
