I had a slipping clutch problem in the low gears at WOT so I figured that my clutch was dieing and decided to replace it. Well, I finally got my ZF and clutch assy down and was about to put the new stuff back up when I noticed that the clutch I took out was a replacement and had very little wear. In fact, I had bought a lightly used FW/Clutch/PP from a forum member and my clutch has less wear on it.
The only thing that seems out of place is that the friction disc is shinier than it should be. What causes this?
Also, I have a slight oil leak from the rear seal. It doesn't look bad enough to be a problem but...?
I read something that came with my new clutch about the FW being the cause of the slipping. Any way to check this?
Any ideas??? I don't want to put all this stuff back together only to still have a problem.
If oil has leaked on it from the rear main seal, this is probably the problem. If not it could be the pressure plate giving up the ghost. Its not on your 86 is it behind your 383? If it is a stock clutch this could be the problem-not enough clamping force. Most clutches do tend to glaze to some degree, is the driven plate oily?. Is the flywheel and pressure plate flat? If not this reduces the friction face surface area. :steering:
I had the same symptoms with my 95 ZF-6. The problem ended up being my clutch slave cylinder. The shaft was “sticking” (for lack of a better technical term) and not letting the clutch fully engage. Just an idea FWIW.
Well, new oil seal is in so that should be the end of the leaking, I hope.
While playing with my flywheel, I noticed that the two parts are very hard to turn independently compared to the known OK flywheel I got used.
Interesting point about the hydraulics. We'll try bleeding the system and check the throw. Does anyone know if there is a minimum spec for the travel of the slave cylinder?
BTW this is all for my 90. The 86 doesn't need a new clutch ... yet.
