I don't know about the gains, but I know the heat sink fins inside the MAF can be used as a programming device for chip calibration. You may have to keep the heat fins intact for some chips, rather than gut it or buy one without the fins. The chip calibrations may not take. :seeya

Why dont you just take the screens off your own and dont worry about the heat sink fins inside.

I took the screens off mine and left the fins alone. Your not going to get a neck snapping feel, but every little bit helps.

What I don't understand is how is it that the screens help ? If I take it off its not gonna make much of a difference anyways because air still goes through it anyhow.

The screens are a restriction to the air flowing freely, they are meant to straighten the flow for the sensor element.

A MAF will flow quite a bit more with out the screens & heat sink (over 150cfm) but I over the years as I have been learning about the custom PROM burning. One thing that is stressed about custom prom is that removing the screens modifies the MAF calibration and makes it much harder to get a good tune from the calibration. For what it is worth, I removed my screens/heatsink and gained a .1 and 1 mph.

I thought it was for debris protection only. Don't the screens actually create turbulence? Removing them smoothes airflow

I removed the MAF screens, replaced aluminimum body with fiber glass to reduce heating air to engine, and put air foil in MF to protect sensor..

no noticible chane in performance. :bb

I was reading that the cooling fins were added only because there were MAF sensor faliures(Bosche) during heat testing in the desert by GM. Same MAF(Bosch)on other cars made by other manufacturers have no cooling fins. CFM potential here. Be very careful removing them!

Suposedly they create a vortex, but anyway the sensor is calibrated for the turbulence. If your into some reading do a search on http://www.thirdgen.org in the DIY-PROM section under 'MAF' or 'screen'

I know it's calibrated for the screens, but the screens were not added for performance. Just to keep crap away from the wire.

Well regardless of all the CFM numbers IF you do this mod to your stock Bosch MAF be careful not to damage it like I did, I found mine to be a bit sensitive. I went and bought a Microtech MAF that is supposed to flow more air. I got it from the MAD catalog and havent had any problems.... :auto:
