After recently finishing up some mods (see sig) and getting my chip fine tuned (thanks to ski_dwn_it) I believe the transmission is on its way out. Here are the symptoms:
Right after the mods were done, the shifts felt rather mushy, and were slow (at WOT, taking almost 1000rpm to complete a shift when manually shifted).
After a while the mushyness increased greatly under automatic control (sloppy/slow/mushy part throttle shifts, and WOT), and got slightly worse under manual control at WOT.
Just today, after running it for the first time in a month or so, I noticed something new. At part throttle, at ~20mph, the transmission slips so bad, it feels like the motor is freewheeling; an additional 25% throttle spins up the motor, with barely any increase in speed. It did this 5 times, it was even more noticable going up a slight hill, where I couldn't increase speed any (unless I went to WOT and forced a downshift).
After getting home, I checked the recently (5 months ago) changed tranny fluid (had a filter/flush) .. and it had very fine dark particles in it (clutches ??) and even worse.. it smelt a little burnt (and there is a heavy duty cooler on the car as well).
Is this a sign this original tranny is toast? If so, I'm looking at several options for rebuilt trannies;
note: last dyno had 265 rwhp and 325rw ft.lb
Bowtie overdrives stage 3
Raptor transmisisons 700r4 raptor
any thoughts/reccomendations if a new tranny is the answer?
The burnt smell is normal, so is the fine particals.I think you have a computer controlled tranny problem.I would look for a second or third opinion from somebody that specializes in aftermarket chips.Fastchips (Ed Wright)ect.Good luck! :seeya
When you see black particles in the fluid and it has a burnt smell, that is not a good sign, it means that the band/clutches are burnt/glazed. That would account for the slipping. And when it starts to slip, it will only get worse.
I agree...it's toast. The only things that cause a burnt smell are overheating or overpowering clutches to the point of not slipping. Clutch particles floating...bad juju

The trans was hydraulically controlled in 90. The only thing electronic is the TCC clutch solenoid. Normal fluid smell is not burnt. I can show you my 87's 120K mile trans that has fluid that smells almost new, and it's not driven easy either.
Check the TV cable adjustment.
If you did any intake work and didn't adjust it properly, the line pressure in the transmission won't be right. Most likely low from your description of the symptom.
You may be able to salvage it for awhile if it's not too badly damaged already.
Good luck.
