Default What stall speed torque converter

It seems it's time for a new tranny for the 90'. I'm looking at Bowtie overdirves, Raptor transmissions, and ?? (insert alternatives here) .

I know I need a new torque converter as well, but, what to get? This is, and will always be a street vehicle, occasionally taken to the track. Because of this, I'm thinking a stall speed of around 1500-1800rpm sounds about right, but that is only a guess.

What do you guys think, any recommendations?

TIA
-Don

I would say a good stall speed would be around 2800

The best way to find out what stall will best fit your application is to take it to a dyno. You will be able to find where your motor is making its peak torque. From there you can base your decision and achieve optimum results.
1500-1800 is too low in my opinion.

Read up on converters herehttp://www.converter.cc/

Also check the archives on this subject.

With your combination, id look at a 2400 stall at least.

Thx for the info guys. I'll take a look at my dyno sheets and run a search through the archives! :)

You already have 1500-1800. That's what the car came with from the factory. With your RWHP I'm guessing it doesn't REALLY kick in until about 2500 RPM??? Like AS84 said, get a 2800. By the way Aaron, we're neighbors.

i agree a nice vigi 2800

if your getting it rebuilt, there is a guy on camaro Z28 that builds them for $800. he makes like $100 out of the deal. But his trans are holding 11.2 runs on beat to poopie cars :steering:

For the strip 2,800rpm might be fine but it will feel loose on the street; I wouldn't go much over 2,000rpm for a tight feel on the street.

TreyZ28, since he wants a street car with occasional track time I suggested the lower stall TC.

Of course a higher stall would get into the power band optimally but on street tires hookup will be a major issue, especially on the street.

If you installed Ti retainers & 10deg locks and tossed the oil shedders I would suggest raising your WOT shift points close to 6k RPM rather than going too high with the TC. That will give you longer pull in lower gears and still allow you to hook up reasonably well. Combine that with a nice TransGo shift kit and it will meel like a new ride.

I have a 1989 Firebird Formula 350 with an FLP level III trans, Trans Go shift kit and a Continental 10" 2500 stall NON-lockup converter.

After installing this trans, it feels like a completely different car! The converter I have weighs approximately 18lbs less than the stock converter. Less weight on the crankshaft results in faster revs and more less wasted power.

Anywhere between 2400 and 2800 will be fine. Do not go anywhere above 2800!! It will put the motor out of its torque range in 1st gear too quickly.

My TC is not locking up. What does this do (pos or neg) and is it definitly TC related? Can it be TV or tranny related??

Default Re: What stall speed torque converter (tworottiedogs)

Could be a couple of things:

-The lock up clutches are worn or broken
-The solenoid is dead
-The PROM or ECM is not sending a signal to lock it up anymore

This could hurt your trans because it needs to be modified in a couple places for a non-lock up and run with a minimum 15,000 GVW auxilary cooler. The excess heat made from the trans in overdrive with out the lockup will send the trans temps really high.
The converter struggles to move the fluid in 4th because it is such a numerically low ratio. The converter has to spin many more times than the trans causing the fluid to almost boil, foam and eat the trans clutches.

Hope this helps!

Yes, it does help. The guy at the tranny shop took it for a spin and verified that it is not locking up and the shift points are way too high (6200). He wants me to drop it off so he can scan the tranny and see what is going on in there.

Thx again for all the good info. Looks like somewhere between 2400 and 2800, probably closer to 2400 because this is a street-only vehicle.
