Does anyone know of steel or solid motor mounts for the C4? I called Moroso, and they said that they don't make them. Do we have to build our own? I would like to have a pair BEFORE I pull the engine. Otherwise, I'll have a pattern, after.
The C4 drivetrain is suspended from four points, the 2 motor mounts and the 2 rear diff carrier bushings. If your goal is to stiffen the drivetrain, it's easy to replace the rear diff carrier bushings (at each end of the rear diff batwing). I did it to my Vette and it's a great improvement, very little increase in NVH.
Re: Solid Motor Mounts for a C4? (silver & red CE)
I have mentioned on The Forum many times that one of THE single most effective suspension "mods" I made was changing the diff carrier bushings. (poly) It tightened up the whole suspension. I immediately noticed that my steering was much more responsive. You hit the nail on the head silver when you noted that there were basically only four "hard" attachment points.

Good suggestion. NHV??? For now, I am getting ready to install some more horsepower. My experience from the past (non Vettes), is that a solidly mounted engine "plants" the suspension, and transfers torque, more thouroghly and quickly. This is for the drag strip, but is IS a daily driver, too. Since I can't find anyone who makes them, is this a bad idea on a C4?

this is so obvious, i can't believe i never thought of that before. i never looked closely, is the differential hard-mounted to the rear subframe? or is it bushed to the subframe, and then the subframe bushed to the frame?
those subframe to frame bushings, are those the ones everyone says is a pain to swap? something about the metal sleeve being difficult to remove?
I know I used solid motor mounts on my '69 vette.....but don't know if they make them for the C4???
They make to much vibration into the chassis anyway...rough going...
So what are you going to do????

The diff casing is mounted to the frame via rubber bushings, you can see them if you look on either end of the batwing.

I had some help pressing the rubber bushing out, the guy that swapped my gear had a press and he just pressed them out. The metal sleeve is easy to remove, I just used a hacksaw to cut a slot in the bushing, then it popped right out. When you consider this was the first time I had every done any "bushing mods" it must be easy, otherwise I'd been lost. I did have the diff off the car, I imagine it would be hard to swap these bushing with the diff on the car.

I found the drivetrain flexes much less and the rear end is "planted" on the road, the car launches and handles much better. I don't have any experience with poly/solid motor mounts except that everyone I know that has done the swap goes back to rubber motor mounts, the NVH is really bad for poly motor mounts. Not many daily drivers are going to use poly/solid motor mounts.
If you're looking for a more solid launch, I'd start with the diff carrier bushings and see what you think. If you're going with solid motor mounts you're going to want poly carrier bushings too.
I've been changing my car over to poly slowly so I can stop when my Vette gets too harsh. I started with swaybar bushing, the next year I did everything in the rear except the four trailing arms. In the next few weeks I am doing the front a-arms. All of this was over 2 years time.

This sounds like good advice. However, I am about to do an engine swap, and it seems like THE time to address the motor mounts. The diff mounts will come when I blow the Dana 36 and have to replace it with a 44. Thanks.

Continue a drag racing habit...with a few more ponies. I am concerned about traction and chassis reaction. I LOVED the solid mounts in my SS396 (454) Chevelle. My 400 HP (or less), torque motor was pulling wheelies, launching from an idle.
