I thought I had fixed my burn't module prob's by affixing two heat sinks to the bottom of the distributor. It just died and left me stranded again today. One possible clue is that I had a short two days ago that took out the alternator. I had to run on battery voltage for a few miles. I think this Accel ECM doesn't like low voltage (below 13.5) at all. When I went to get another module at the parts store the guy at the counter told me I would have this problem with burning up modules as long as I used that style module. He said GM had problems with this design and changed it due to the problem I'm experiencing. It is the style used in the 92 camaro with remote mount coil.
Anyone ever heard of this prob?
It is on my '73 vette with Accel F/I with 6.0 ECM and Accel Billitech comp. controlled distributor.
I,m stumped, I'm thinking about switching over to the stock 730 computer and harness just to get around this problem.
help!!
David
I forgot to mention, it's burned up 4 modules in the last 3 months!!
What spark coil are you using? The spark control module was designed for a specific spark coil and when aftermarket coils are used, the resistance and inductance of the primary cause excessive current flow through the spark module and shorten their life. I recommend that you install the spark coil the module was designed for. Besides, spark energy is insignificantly different and sometimes smaller than with a stock coil.
Hmmm. The coil being a factor is something I hadn't considered. Everything about the fuel injection is an Accel product. The distributor is the computer controlled Accel Billitech remote mount coil model and I bought their Accel coil along with it all from Jeg's. The Accel ECM and harness I bought used. I had no troubles from the system for about a year. Then the original module that came with the distributor burned up. I have been replacing them with O'Reilly's "Select" brand modules (the more expensive ones). maybe I either need to switch to an original coil or buy another module from Accel. If it is caused by too much current thru the module then the original coil solution sounds like the best long term fix to me.
thanks
